Daniel volunteers with the fictional Haven Street Community Church archive. He records elders, choir rehearsals, and mutual-aid stories while teaching younger members that a clean recording matters less than a respectful conversation.

An electrical flaw became part of the recording's memory.
Daniel tried for an hour to remove the old room's low hum. An elder asked him to leave a little of it in—the sound had been there for every service she could remember.

Meal deliveries produced an accidental oral history.
Between packing bags, volunteers told Daniel how the program began decades earlier. He recorded the stories after every address was removed and every speaker agreed to share.

The most useful interviewing skill was the hardest one to practice.
Daniel learned that silence is not empty. It gives someone time to remember, decide, and choose their own next sentence. The archive became better when he stopped rushing to help.
